2022-2023 Welcome Back Letter

"Welcome Back!" on chalk board with school supplies surrounding text.

Dear Discovery Families,

Our school year is about to begin, and we want to welcome all our students and our new teachers Josh Morton and Heather Grinde for the 2022-2023 school year.

I hope this letter finds all of you as excited to begin the new school year as we are.  As your principal, I look forward to meeting each of you as we create a new partnership that will allow us to work together to develop your educational goals and programs.  I invite you to say hello whenever you can so we may begin to get to know each other a little better.  My door is always open to you if you need any assistance throughout the school year.

I look forward to the challenges and opportunities for success that await each of us as we adventure together into this new school year.  We anticipate a great year at Discovery for all our students whom we know will be successful as we provide HOPE for the future.

We realize the last few years have been challenging for everyone.  We realize our students will be at different levels of comfort about returning to school.  Remember we have supports in place to assist you as you return including access to the Peninsula Health Clinic on our campus.

Students who are transported to and from school by private car are to be dropped off/picked up in the front of the Madrona Heights School.  All Discovery student drivers must enter campus from the rear access road to school.  The front parking lot at Madrona Heights is reserved for other programs served on the campus.  Discovery student drivers are required to obtain a parking permit and are to park in designated areas for Discovery student use in the rear of the building.  All drivers will provide proof of valid license and insurance.   Permits are available at the office.  Upon approval and purchase of an ASB card (see below), you will be issued a hang tag permit which must be displayed from your rearview mirror.  This permit will allow you to park on campus.

Signing In When Arriving/Checking Out Prior to End of Class

As soon as you arrive at school, go to the Discovery office to sign in.  Daily sign in at the attendance kiosk is expected immediately upon arrival to school.  If you need to leave campus before classes end you will sign out from the classroom you are in at the time of your departure.

 Daily Schedule/Absences/Covid

Discovery teachers are available for advising ½ hour prior to class starting.    Please stay home if you don’t feel well, if you are unable to attend class, please check in with your advisor via e-mail or google classroom to arrange with your teachers for make-up work. Masks are optional and a personal choice for all staff and students.  Please make every attempt to schedule all personal appointments on the days you do not attend class.

Reminder:  All South Kitsap School District campuses are smoke-free.  There will be no smoking in parking lots, in cars, around district buildings, in the housing area behind the gym, or within 1,000 feet of any school building at Madrona Heights, Orchard Heights or Marcus Whitman.

Breakfast & Lunches

We are hoping that Breakfast and lunches will be free to all Discovery student this year.  With the approval of a grant and all our families filling out a survey, together we could make this possible.  This would allow all students to get both meals on campus.  The state still would require that the Free and Reduced Form be filled out as the information provides other opportunities to families who qualify.  Forms will be available in skyward and online during orientation.

We look forward to helping you as you work toward completion of your high school education during the coming 2021/2022 school year.  If there is any way I can be of assistance to you, please stop by the Discovery office.
