DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

   April 15th, 2024

Kiwanis Student of the Month is Samantha Galvez.

 Hello, Seniors!
You may have earned credit from Olympic College for FREE at no cost to you! You did this by having taken one or more dual credit CTE at SKHS (Career and Technical Education) classes, registering yourself and the class into SERS (Statewide Enrollment and Reporting System), AND earning a B grade or higher. In order to claim these credits that cost you nothing but your hard work, you need to fill out a quick form requesting transcription. Olympic College will then create a transcript with your earned credits, likely at the end of the school year. Regardless of whether you plan to attend college after high school and send them your OC transcript or not, it's worth your 1 minute of time to fill out the form. You can add these credits to the education portion of your job resume, or if you plan to join the military, those credits may benefit you. Also, you never know what future you has planned😊.  These credits are yours and you've earned them!
Click the link below and scroll down to step 4 " Complete the Transcription Request Form"
*Make sure to enter your legal name and your full mailing address including your house number if it's not a PO Box.*

2024–25 FAFSA Issue Alerts: Open Issues and Workarounds

There are still technical issues within the FAFSA system, preventing numerous applicants from completing the form. Callers to the hotline have encountered hours-long hold times, and many report being disconnected without warning. Reaching a human being may not help since so many issues remain unresolved. For now, the only option that may provide a quick answer is the U.S. ED’s full list of open issues and workarounds at https://fsapartners.ed.gov/knowledge-center/topics/fafsa-simplification-information/2024-25-fafsa-issue-alerts. Users must click on an open issue to expand it and see the suggested workaround. Not all open issues have workarounds presently. Any resolved issues are also posted, underneath the open list.

Also for Washington you can go to the WSAC website https://wsac.wa.gov/2024-25-FAFSA-Updates

Dear Discovery Graduate:

Graduation is coming up very quickly and there are some important things you need to know.

Graduation will be June 10th at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church, 7700 Skansie Ave, Gig Harbor 98335.    Graduates need to arrive by 5:00 pm for rehearsal. Doors open for family and guests at 6:00 pm. Graduation starts at 6:30 pm and ends at 8:00 pm. Complete 2024 graduation information can be found at https://discovery.skschools.org/

Prior to Graduation

  • Please verify that the contact information we have in Skyward is accurate.  If not, call 360-443-3680 to make changes. Office hours are M-F 7:30 am-4:00 pm.
  • Order your cap, gown, and tassel at Jostens.com.  The deadline to order online is May 10th.  Cap and gown must be royal blue.
  • If you borrowed a cap and gown from Discovery and need a tassel, you can order through the main office by May 17th.  Tassels are $19.00 including tax.  This will save the shipping and handling of $6.49 for 1 tassel.  Discovery covers this cost, so you don’t have to. We accept cash and cards only. Cash must be exact; we are unable to make change.
  • Complete all classes and graduation requirements, including your Xello lessons, by May 31.
  • Please complete your graduation check list and profile in Graduates 2024 Google Classroom (us6ifvr) by May 31st. If you don’t complete this, you will miss out on vital pieces of the graduation ceremony planning.
  • Return all Discovery items, including book(s), your Chromebook, case, and charger by June 7th or if lost, pay fine. (Or you will not be able to walk in the ceremony).
  • If you have borrowed a cap and gown, you can pick them up anytime, before June 10th.
  • Be sure to keep in touch with your advisor and watch for updates about graduation in the Graduates Google Classroom or on the Discovery website https://discovery.skschools.org/
  • You can pick up your graduation yard sign, once we receive them, from the main office once you have finished your Xello lessons and your Graduation profile.
  • Rehearsals (Both are Mandatory to Attend) will be held at 1:00 pm on June 7 following the BBQ at Discovery and at 5:00 pm (Be on time) at Chapel Hill prior to the ceremony on Monday June 10. Bring your cap, gown, and tassel.  You will not have private storage, so leave valuables at home.
  • You will be onsite for quite a while, so eat something before you arrive.

At Graduation

Doors will open for all family and friends at 6:00 pm. Graduates will already be in a staging area. Please inform your guests you will not be able to see them before the ceremony.

This ceremony is for graduates to celebrate and enjoy with family and friends. Please respect the venue’s expectations of no balloons, glitter, silly string, or confetti.  The ceremony will last 1-1.5 hours.

If you will have more than 10 guests at the ceremony, please notify the main office of the size of your party.  If there is a fussy baby/toddler, please use the Family Room for viewing the ceremony.

Graduates attending the ceremony participate in a flower recognition presentation.  The school gives graduates two flowers to present to key people who helped them graduate.  This could be a family member, teacher, mentor, or a friend.

Diplomas

If the graduate walks in the ceremony and bought their cap and gown, their diploma will be in the diploma jacket when it is handed to them.

If they borrowed a cap and gown, they will be able to obtain their diploma when they return the borrowed cap and gown either directly after the ceremony in the foyer or in the main office at the school, if they return it later.

If you are not attending the graduation ceremony, you can pick up your diploma in the main office after June 10th.

End of Year BBQ

We will be having an end of the year BBQ on June 4 for Monday/Tuesday students and June 7 for Thursday/Friday students. Discovery students only.  Please come on your scheduled day. WST, Distance Learning or Corey’s Independent students can choose which day to attend. If you have finished and are no longer attending, please call the office for BBQ times.  Lots of food and fun and community resources available.  Don’t miss out!!

  • Prom – Watch for information in the student bulletin.  The bulletin can be found weekly on our webpage.  Discovery.skschools.org
